EMERGENCY LIGHTING ENGINEERS & QUALIFIED ELECTRICIANS
Location: Staffordshire / Wolverhampton / West Midlands
Employment: Permanent
Hours: 40 hours per week
Travel: Local/regional - no routine overnight stays expected
We are currently looking to identify experienced Emergency Lighting Engineers / Testers and Qualified Electricians for a new contract covering Staffordshire and the wider West Midlands.
The work will involve emergency lighting inspection, testing, maintenance, replacement and remedial works across a variety of public-sector premises, including:
- Schools
- Police headquarters
- Emergency service premises
- Other public-sector buildings
Due to the nature of the contract, candidates will need to meet specific qualification, training and security requirements.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS ESSENTIALCandidates should hold:
Emergency Lighting
- Recognised Emergency Lighting Maintenance / Testing qualification.
- Examples include the NICEIC Emergency Lighting Systems Design & Maintenance course or an equivalent recognised qualification.
Electrical
- City & Guilds 2382 - 18th Edition, or equivalent.
- Safe Isolation training and competence.
- Experience carrying out emergency lighting replacement and remedial works.
Health & Safety
- Current Asbestos Awareness.
- Current Working at Height training.
- Relevant electrical installation qualifications.
- ECS Gold Card.
- Experience with electrical fault finding.
- Experience with electrical testing and verification.
- Previous experience working within schools, public-sector buildings or other controlled environments.
TWO TYPES OF ENGINEER REQUIRED 1. QUALIFIED ELECTRICIANIMPORTANT: The recognised Emergency Lighting qualification is a specific requirement of the tender. This qualification will therefore be required alongside any ECS Gold Card or wider electrical qualifications.
We are looking for electricians who have the wider electrical competence to undertake:
- Emergency lighting testing and maintenance.
- Fault finding.
- Electrical testing and verification.
- Emergency lighting replacements.
- Remedial electrical works.
- Safe isolation.
- General electrical installation and maintenance duties.
- Completion of testing records and relevant documentation.
Starting rate: £18.00 per hour
Following a successful assessment against agreed standards:
£20.00 per hour
Based on 40 hours per week:
Rate Annual Salary £18.00 per hour £37,440 £20.00 per hour £41,600 Package includes:- Company van.
- Fuel card.
- Agreed personal mileage.
- Tools or agreed tool-replacement arrangement.
- 5.6 weeks' paid holiday, including bank holidays.
- Overtime and call-out opportunities.
We are also interested in candidates whose main area of expertise is emergency lighting inspection, testing and maintenance.
Candidates may be considered where they hold:
- Recognised Emergency Lighting qualification.
- 18th Edition.
- Safe Isolation.
- Relevant emergency lighting experience.
Candidates do not necessarily need the broader installation, fault-finding and electrical verification experience expected of an Approved Electrician, provided they are competent for the duties they will undertake.
PAYThe salary/rate for these positions is currently being established.
The £18-£20 per hour rate relates to the separate Qualified Electrician vacancy and should not be assumed to apply to Emergency Lighting Tester positions.

- Qualifications.
- Emergency lighting experience.
- Electrical competence.
- Testing capability.
- Scope of responsibilities.
For qualifying, pre-agreed client-requested site hours:
Hours / Days Rate Monday-Friday, 5pm-11pm 1.5 × basic rate Saturdays 1.5 × basic rate 11pm-6am Double time Sundays Double time DBS & SECURITY REQUIREMENTSBecause the contract includes schools, police headquarters and emergency service premises, successful candidates will need to complete the appropriate security checks.
This is expected to include:
- Enhanced DBS checks.
- Additional police/security vetting where required.
Candidates must be able to provide sufficient lead time for these checks to be completed before commencing work.
LOCATION & TRAVELThe contract covers Staffordshire and the wider West Midlands.
The general working area includes:
Bilston | Wolverhampton | Staffordshire | West Midlands
The typical working area is expected to average approximately 30 miles from Wolverhampton, although this is not a fixed boundary.
Candidates should therefore be within a reasonable commuting distance of the work.
No routine overnight stays are anticipated.
